Tranquil Tyrells Retirement was set up in May 2012 by Property owner Liz Kendrick and experienced horsewoman Paula Sykes. This may be a new venture but it comes with a lifetime of Equine Knowledge.

Paula was introduced to horse riding at 13yrs old and unlike most, her first rosette was gained by winning the
Novice showjumping class at a local show riding "Tommy" the donkey.  Everyone laughed at her when she arrived at the show but when she left they were all cheering her. Paula says "this is where the magic began, Tommy taught me so much and over the years I have built on that equine understanding".

Paula has dabbled in all forms of horsemanship including showjumping, eventing and even racing. Newsell Park was a decent racehorse finishing 4th in the Ebor at York Races but had a ruptured tendon when she got him for £1.50 from a racing yard.  He had been due to be destroyed as his racing days were over and at 8yrs old his future was not good. She nursed him back to full fitness with months of TLC. Once sound and after a year of roadwork they also showjumped. However the miracle came at Newmarket Racecourse when training and riding Newsells Park to an impressive one furlong win over her rivals in the Newmarket Town Plate. Newsell eventually was re-homed in Norfolk and she lost contact but this is something Paula always regretted as she still feels she owed him so much more. Paula then had Grand Harbour, famous for his refusal to race when he was pacemaker for Teleprompter in the Derby.  "Hubby"  was his stable name and Paula evented him too with no problems but when she sold him the stubborn streak returned and he refused to jump for his new owner.

Now the proud owner of another successful ex racer called Yeast (who she will keep forever) she has met her most challenging equine to date.  Yeast was the winner of the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot but when aged 9yrs old and still in training in Newmarket he suffered suspensory ligament damage and he too had broken down.  Up for another challenge, Paula was determined to nurse him back to fitness/soundness which took many months.  This caring time together gave them a bond of love and trust for each other which is so visible today. Yeast is a big horse with lots of character but in the wrong hands would have been lethal. In 2007 when hospitalised at the vets due to lameness, within hours a big sign was put on his door  "THIS HORSE BITES AND KICKS, TWO PEOPLE ENTER AT ALL TIMES".  This is the horse that gently takes a polo from Paula's mouth!

Paula has an understanding and compassion with all horses, each one is different and handled accordingly.  She does all the horses herself but has help with the field/land maintenance.  We also have loads of areas where you can picnic or just amble around whilst watching your beloved horse enjoy his/her days.

The village has Shepreth Wildlife Park, Country Homes & Garden Centre plus the quaint "Teacake" tearoom and a train station if you wanted to get into Cambridge without driving, so a great day out when you do visit. We encourage visiting whenever you wish by prior arrangement but you can rest assured your horse will have found paradise at Tranquil Tyrells.
